Plantations shutters have been in use since the Tudors ruled Britain,
prior to the 16th Century. Originally consisting of only a flat board,
used to cover the bottom of a window (the portion without glass), this
variety of shutter has evolved to include slats and to be used in the
form of plantation blinds. Plantation shutters have many useful qualities,
including insulation, in addition to being visually pleasing.
Most plantations shutters are made from wood. The most popular types
of wood used to make these shutters are hard woods like poplar and
bass. It is possible to paint plantation blinds, or they can be left
with a natural finish. If painted, plantation shutters are rather
easy to touch up. They do not experience the same degree of wear
that curtains, and even more regular blinds, show.
The main feature of this type of shutter is that it is attached
to the window frame by a hinge. The slats are arranged within the
frame of the shutter so that they can rotate open or closed. In addition
to rotating slats, it is possible to push plantations shutters entirely
to the side, allowing not only for excellent lighting control, but
also ease of use.
The vinyl plantation shutter
Wood can be very expensive, and though it is a good insulator, it
can be difficult to maintain. A vinyl plantation shutter, on the
other hand, is neither as expensive nor difficult to keep up. Vinyl
can be in any colour, including faux wood. Additionally, it will
not warp, swell, crack, split or fade like wood can sometimes do.
Vinyl is a moderately good insulator. It is not as good as wood,
and condensation can form on vinyl, but it is energy efficient. It
can add to the over all efficiency of your windows.
