Shades are just another
item on a list of window treatment possibilities. A shade can provide
privacy, as well as look nice. Companies like Hunter Douglas, American
Blinds and Bali all sell shades that can be used in the home. While
some are plain, others can be ornate. And they are made from a variety
of materials, from fabric to vinyl.
Roller shades
Roller
shades are quite useful. They can be made from fabric or from vinyl. They
come in many colours and some are even feature designs. A shade
made from fabric can even be embroidered with customized designs.
Roller shades are so named because they “roll” up
and down. Usually a stick is sewn in to the bottom of the shade.
Pulling down allows the shade to unroll and cover the portion,
or all, of the window that you want covers. If you want to
put the shade back up, you take the bottom of the shade and snap
sharply to release the roll at the top, and then let the shade
roll naturally back up. These can occasionally be tricky to use,
but most are fairly easy to clean and maintain: the fabric can
be washed in a machine and the vinyl can be cleaned with soap and
water.
Cellular shades
Cellular shades, like Bali cellular
shades, are different from roller
shades. These shades go up in sections, or cells. This means that
you pull a string, and the first section rises. If you want your
Bali cellular shades to reveal more of the window, you pull more.
This causes a bunching effect that, far from being unattractive,
is actually rather nice looking. Cellular shades can be an elegant
addition to your home. They look a little nicer than roller shades,
and much more elegant than mini blinds. Most Bali cellular shades
do not come in vinyl, as it can take on a crumpled or stiff look
when pulled up.
It possible to
make your own cellular shades. Additionally, if you buy the roller
from a hardware or home improvement store, it is possible to buy
some fabric and make your own roller shades. Major brands are american
